North Cape is also home to the Atlantic Wind Test Site (AWTS) which was established in 1980 as Canadas National Wind Energy Laboratory. Located on the northwest tip of PEI the AWTS is exposed for 300degrees to the windswept Gulf of St Lawrence.Built in 1875 it is the tallest lighthouse on PEI standing at 69 feet and is called a second generation lighthouse built with square tapered towers which became common for lighthouses built after confederation.
